Merger Would Be Heritage's Third Since 1980 The merger of Raeford Savings & Loan Association and Heritage Federal Savings & Loan Associa tion. expected to be completed in December, would be the second this year for Heritage and the third since mid- 1980. Franklin Teal, president of the Raeford institution, announced Housing Tips by WUIfe Feathentoae, Jr. County Extension Chairman This will be the last writing of this particular column "Housing Tips' . however, for all readers information on the subject will be provided in this paper under another heading. My experience as an agricultural agent in Hoke County for 5 years lOVj months, first as an assistant agent and then as an associate agent, has been a rewarding ex perience for me and 1 believe it has been for many of the people I've met and worked with. I would like to say thank you to the people of this county for responding to the educational pro grams we've conducted through the Agricultural Extension Service, and for the support that you have given to these program efforts. With the support of manv people we have been able to initiate and carry out a Farm-City Week pro gram since 1977 which emphasizes the interdependence of rural and urban people. 1 think we all realize that "no man is an island" but we often fail to see how these two segments of our society could not enjoy life to the fullness that we presently do without both gToups working together. 1^81 will be the third consecutive year that we will take high school juniors and seniors to N.C. State University where they have an opportunity to participate in Open House at the university. Juniors and seniors are making decisions that will help determine careers, life styles and standards of living for a lifetime. This is a very worthy cause. and those volunteers that support this effort are very much appreciated. The emphasis we have placed on housing in this county has been most rewarding, both to individual family members and to each county taxpayer. Since 1975 about "*00 housing units have been built in Hoke County. The assessed value of S27 million. At the present ad valorem tax rate of SI. 01 per SI 00 evaluation, this property brings to the county S2",2.*00 annually in tax revenue. It seems apparent to me that this program is of value to each Hoke County resident. And finally. I would like to briefly mention the work done in the Shawtown com munity. One of the most rewarding experiences in Extension has been to see the people of Shawtown get a state - maintained road that they had worked on for 12 years and for families to organize and put forth a cooperative effort to get water to homes that were without water. Many people helped to make these things possible, and 1 am very happy to have their support, for without it the success of these projects would be more difficult. The purpose of writing this particular article today is I believe the readers of this column should know our accomplishments. How ever. these are only a few of the manv things that we are involved with. As of September 16 I moved into another role with the Hoke County Extension Service. Thanks to our Hoke County commissioners. 1 am the county Agricultural Extension chairman. 1 welcome the oppor tunity to serve the citizens of Hoke County in this capacity. The posi tion will be challenging just as the others were. However, we know that challenges help us to grow and for each person that has developed or become an expert in an area somebody, somewhere provided the opportunity for that person to grow. As chairman. 1 will continue the educational thrust we have in Housing and Community Develop ment plus give administrative leadership to our staff. We en courage you to call on us for any of your needs in the areas of agri culture. home economics. 4-H and youth or community development . The media in this county has been very supportive to our efforts. On behalf of the extension staff 1 would like to say thank you to Tk* News Journal staff for their support in carrying our informaton to you. the reader. Health Watch Safety Seat For Child Advised It's vour child's life .... but it's YOUR DECISION. At least 80 of every 100 children who die in automobile crashes could survive if their parents would make the effort to secure them in crash-tested safety seats. Like most parents, you recognize everyday threats to your baby's life. You protect your child from sharp objects and poisons around the home and immunize him her against childhood diseases. How ever do you realize that more North Carolina children are killed in motor vehicle accidents than by any other single cause? In fact, your children are much more likely to die from auto accidents than from childhood diseases, such as rubella, diphtheria, polio, measles, and whooping cough . Yet out of every 100 young North Carolina children who are in car crashes have not been buckled up by then parents. In a crash or other sudden stop, only the car stops suddenly. The occupants within the car continue Vets mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmim's* w EDITOR S NOTE: Following ate representative questions answered daily by VA counselors. Full in formation is available at any VA office. Q - I am interested in starting my own business. Does the Veterans Administration provide business loans to veterans? A ? No. The VA does not provide business loans for veterans. Such loans may be available through the Small Business Ad ministration. Check the "U.S. Government" section of your local telephone dkectory for the address of the nearest SBA office. Q -- 1 am a World War II veteran who let my CI insurance lapse years ago. I recently rend that a new bill passed Congress giving veterans nke me a dmdtnd on this lapsed moving until something stops them. Restrained occupants are safely stopped by belts, but unre strained occupants are thrown against the windshield or dash board, or even out of the car. Children are not miniature adults. Their minds are different. They cannot make their own safety decisions. Their bodies are different. They need their own special restraint systems. The most effective way to safely secure a child in a car is to have him her ride in a crash-tested infant carrier or safety seat. The seat belts that come in cars should be used rather than no protection at all. Because children aren't old enough to make their own safety decisions, the only people who can decide to protect them are parents and other adults. It's your child's life .... but it's your decision . insurance. How do I apply? A ? Any story you hear about insurance dividends for lapsed Veterans Administration insurance is only a false rumor that oc casionally spreads in different parts of the country. The only insurance dividends currently being paid by the VA are to veterans who were issued participating policies in World War I. World War II and the Korean Conflict, who have maintained the policies in premium paying status. Q -- Is there any time limit for using my certificate of eligibility for a Veterans Administration guaran teed home loan? A - No. There is no time limit for asing your certificate of eligibility for the purchase of a home. Raeford Savings & Loan's stock holders must approve the proposal to apply for a federal charter for the Raeford association, since an association must be chartered as federal before it can merge with a federal association. The proposal has been approved by the Raefocd board.
